5/15/2012 SCARES Meeting Notes

  • May 12th Special Event/SkyWarn Class

    • Thanks to everyone that participated in the W4F event last Saturday.  Despite the poor band conditions, many contacts were made.

    • Special thanks to Trevor Boucher from the NWS for another excellent presentation.
    • It was a successful run at getting go-kits operational.  That was very encouraging.  I'm proud to know we have so many qualified and equipped operators on the team.

    • Some of the things to improve on/ideas for next year:

      • Let's try to book around other events.  We were competing with an Air Show, and some other events.

      • The EOC is a difficult place to find for the general public.  Even GPS systems don't point to the EOC properly.

      • Richard, WD4BKY, mentioned Opry Mills would be interested in hosting next year.  That would be a perfect place.  Not only would it have a lot of public traffic, but it was a casualty of the flood itself.  Plus, other ham groups would likely become involved.

      • We should get other entities to get involved with us:

        • Red Cross

        • Coast Guard

        • TEMA/SCEMA, etc.

  • Field Day

    • SCARA has planned a Field Day/SCARA Birthday event for June 23rd from 10am to 10pm.  There will be cake and ice cream!!!

    • Let's all make a point to spread the word.  Let's make sure we reach out to:

      • Local, county, state politicians

      • Media

      • Fire, rescue, police, etc.

    • SCEMA has already suggested having their mobile command vehicle on site.  We can add to that with other departments.

    • It was discussed to have an Information Table/Booth for anyone who wishes to learn more about amateur radio and ARES. Richard Hall, WB4TNH will be providing some of that documentation for us.
